As I prepared to complete my student teaching during my undergrad, I never thought that a global pandemic would change how I look at education and technology forever. Technology has become a massive part of my daily tasks and routines as I have spent more time teaching in the classroom. Furthermore, I have also learned how technology can transform assessments to check for understanding.
Before this unit, I thought of assessment and technology as essential tools that should be utilized together for instruction. Yet, I could have done better at bringing both aspects together as often as I would like. Technology can bring vital 21st-century skills to the learning experience that can create more meaningful learning opportunities. Moving forward, I have reflected on my lessons and begun redesigning them to bring these ideas and aspects from these units together. Yet, I still am interested in utilizing new technology like artificial intelligence (AI).
How has AI technology impacted me as an educator?
Assessment and technology have been at the forefront of learning these last few weeks. In a changing world, AI has been in the headlines and conversations, sparking a change in my thought about it. Before, I was against it, even thinking about using it in my classroom, let alone utilizing it for the design of assessments. My reason is that I have had students plagiarize with it, but how could I teach them the benefits and how to use it as a tool?
Besides its use for simple tasks, AI can transform the learning experience by making things more efficient with feedback, grading, and more (Learning and Teaching: Teach HQ, n.d.). For example, for my sandbox assessment 9
, I was required to use ChatGTP as a tool in the learning process, and I had no idea what to do. I decided to make it a learning experience about the content of historical documents. My students spend a lot of time at the beginning of the year understanding primary and secondary sources, so I wanted to use AI to show them how it can be used as a resource and the differences in using AI. My students would compare the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution to a summary of each written in ChatGTP. This exercise became a lesson on how ChatGTP can be a tool and demonstrated the benefits and constraints.

After getting my thoughts wrapped around the idea of using AI technology, I have begun to see how this tool, when used properly, helps educate students, but you also need to demonstrate the negatives. The lack of human creativity is one of my concerns with this technology. As in my example, I found a way to adapt this tool to incorporate it. Yet, what impact will this have on my students? As the world of AI expands, I am interested in learning more and seeing how it can impact me as an educator, my students, and the field of education.
